Please note that our Snape Maltings maintenance colleague has to empty the onboard ‘grey tank’ every few days, as well as top up your water. He does this on the deck and won’t need internal access. He always endeavours to do this like a ninja but don’t be surprised if you see someone on board first thing in the morning.

History;
Built in 1899, she measures 28.7m in length by 5.5m wide (beam) with a draft (amount of the boat under water) of 1.6m. She is fittted with a DAF 1160 engine (160hp) though of course she was originally purely a sailing barge and this is a later addition.
Built in the Van Den Andel yard in Papendercht, Holland as a single mast sailing Klipper of 23m. De-rigged in 1963 she continued to work as a motor barge under the name of ‘Johanna’, carrying general cargos on the Rhine between Lobith and Emerich in Holland, and between Duisberg and Wesel in Germany. She continued trading under the skippers Johannes Meeuwsen and Jan De Hoog until he 1970’s. In the 1980’s she was used as a boat-building workshop before being retuned to sail under her original name of Onderneming and operating as a charter barge under sail out of Harlingen in Friesland. In 2009 she was brought to London for restoration and conversion to a residential and cruising barge

A fabulous weekend at last! What a gorgeous setting and so peaceful sat amongst the reeds to eat our breakfast! The barge is fabulous, spacious and very well equipped. Fantastic walks/shopping and a great meal at the Plough and Sail. Thank you.
A great weekend celebration for a 60th birthday. Boat was fantastic! So big! Did some great walks and a few pub visits! Great venue and hope to be back some day!
Our third attempt to stay on the barge (our first and second attempts cancelled by Boris!) We’ve had a great few days on board, visiting old family haunts of Aldeburgh and Orford. Thanks Carl and your team John and Claire, Howard and Tessie and Marmalade the dog.
We were not sure if 6 adults and 2 children would all fit comfortably but this boat goes on forever! We all had a lovely time celebrating the grandparents belated 70th! Thank you for the yummy breakfast box and all your considerate hospitality.
Onderneming what can we say but wow what a fantastic boat. We loved ‘twee’ last year but there is so much room here. We were here for a relaxing break and that’s what we had. Fab location with loads of walks for the dogs straight off the boat. We did get to a couple of new places this year including Walberswick beach well worth a visit and a great early morning swim had by all. Highly recommend Onderneming and we hope to be back next year to see more wildlife including otters and a barn owl in what is a very magical place. Thank you Carl for allowing us to share your wonderful boat.
Tales from the riverbank – hearty meals with lashings of red wine, jigsaw around the table in front of the glow from the wood burner. A family memory never to be forgotten. Needless to say a good time was had by all. Many thanks.
Our visit was great, we had lots of fun.
Our visit was postponed from 2020 and so we celebrated a 50th birthday a year late! We all loved the barge and agreed we would have loved to stay longer. We took the sailors path to Aldeburgh and doged the worst of the rain! Many thanks Carl and team.
Couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday than on this magnificent barge! We loved it. The morning and the evening times were especially peaceful and enchanting out on deck. Exploring the surrounding and immediate area was revealing as never been this far East before! Walberswick, Southwold, Aldeburgh and Snape were all brilliant.
What a marvellous unique place. It felt magical and special from the moment we all arrived. Loved all the attention to detail to make people’s stays as perfect as possible (fans, candles etc) we have been very blessed with the best of British weather for our stay. Loved Aldeburgh, Lowestoft, Southwold and all the lovely pubs and shops around Onderneming. Thank you.
